FAQ
The bot (for streamers)
How do I set it up?
Open the dashboard, sign in with Kick or Twitch, pick your language and flip the Translator switch. That's it. Anything in chat that isn't in your language gets a translated line from the bot.
Can I turn it on and off from chat?
Yes. Type !translate on or !translate off in your chat and the dashboard switch follows. That only changes the chat you typed it in. Got Kick and Twitch both? !translate off all and !translate on all flip both at once. Turn on "Mods can use the commands" if you want your mods to be able to as well.
Why didn't it translate some messages?
On purpose: messages under 3 words are skipped (so "lol" stays "lol"), commands are skipped, messages already in your language are skipped, and each person gets a pause between translations. The bot also caps itself per minute so it never floods your chat.
What does it cost?
Nothing for now. The free plan covers 50,000 translated characters a month per account, shared between Kick and Twitch if you link both. If you use it all up, the bot goes quiet until next month and the dashboard tells you.
Do you save my chat?
No. Messages are checked as they pass through and are never stored or logged. We keep your settings and how many characters were translated, nothing else. See the privacy page.
How do I stop it?
Press "Disconnect" on that channel's card at the top of the dashboard. That turns the bot off for it and deletes the saved sign-in. You can also remove ChitChatBot from your Kick account's connected apps, or your Twitch connections page.
Does it work on Twitch?
Yes. Sign in with Twitch on the dashboard and the bot starts translating there too. It speaks as its own account, Chitchatb0t, so don't be alarmed when it shows up. Got both Kick and Twitch? Link both, and flip between them at the top of the dashboard. Each keeps its own settings.
The viewer extension
ChitChatBot Viewer is the free extension for people watching a stream. The questions below are about it.
How do I install the viewer extension?
We're not on the Chrome Web Store yet, so for now you install it by hand. It takes about a minute. Chrome and Brave on desktop, Chrome 138 or newer.
- Unzip the file you just downloaded. Keep the folder somewhere it won't get deleted, because Chrome loads the extension from it.
- Open
chrome://extensions(brave://extensionsin Brave) and turn on Developer mode in the top right. - Click Load unpacked and pick the unzipped ChitChatBot folder.
- Open a Kick or Twitch channel, a YouTube live stream, a TikTok LIVE or a Rumble stream, and refresh the page. Yes, refresh. It's always the refresh.
- Pin ChitChatBot from the puzzle-piece menu so you can find its settings later.
Chrome may show a "disable developer mode extensions" pop-up when it starts. Just close it, it's Chrome being careful. To update, download the new zip and replace the folder.
Using it
Nothing is translating
Refresh the stream tab. Seriously. You also need Chrome 138 or newer (or a recent Brave) on a desktop computer, because it uses the browser's built-in translator. Messages already in your language, very short messages and emote-only messages are skipped on purpose. "LOL" doesn't need help.
It's asking me to download a language
Each language pair needs a one-time download. Chrome only lets a download start from a click or key press, so with Auto-download languages on (the default, under Reading in the menu) it starts on your next click anywhere on the page. If you turned that off, click the bar once instead. Either way it won't ask again for that pair.
Why is a translation a bit off?
The built-in translator is quick and private, but slang and jokes can confuse it a little. Chat is mostly slang and jokes, so, yes. A better option may come later.
How do I hide the original text?
Open the menu and choose "Translation only" under Reading. Out of sight, out of mind.
How does writing in my language work?
Turn on Writing in the menu and type in the chat box. A small preview shows what's about to go out in the chat's language. Enter sends the translation. Shift+Enter sends what you actually wrote. You can swap them in the menu. Commands that start with / or !, and very short messages, are sent exactly as typed.
What happens to emotes?
They stay where you put them and never get translated. That includes 7TV, BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ emotes, and you can turn those off under Emotes in the menu. To actually see 7TV emotes in the chat, you need the 7TV extension.
Does it work on phones?
Not yet. It needs a desktop browser.
Is it free? How can I support it?
It's free, and there are no ads. If you feel generous, there's a pay-what-you-like page, also under Support in the menu. It's completely optional, and chat will still love you either way.
Something broke. Where do I tell you?
Use the bug report form, also under Settings in the extension. Say what happened and which site you were on. Add an email if you want a reply. Please don't include passwords or private messages.
Is it affiliated with Kick, Twitch, YouTube, TikTok or Rumble?
No. ChitChatBot is an independent project and only changes how chat looks on your own screen. They have no idea we exist.
